3 Films You Can Stream Now in Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re featuring three films that can be streamed right now in celebration of the history and culture of people with heritage from Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Spain. And a big takeaway from this year’s Emmy Awards is that onscreen Latinx representation should not be overlooked. So keep reading for three titles that stand out as positive examples of films featuring Latinx stories and actors.
How to Be a Latin Lover (Netflix)
Eugenio Derbez leads the cast of the Lionsgate dramedy as Maximo, a man who made a career out of seducing rich, older women before his senior sugar mama of 25 years swapped him out for a younger model. With nowhere to go, Maximo moves in with his estranged sister (Salma Hayek) and her young son, Hugo (Raphael Alejandro). His scheme to use Hugo to meet a rich widow leads to some important lessons about family and how love and trust need to be earned. Performances by Derbez and Hayek are definitely ones to watch, with an easy camaraderie and comedic timing between the two. And Alejandro shines as their young co-star, holding his own amongst other big names such as Raquel Welch.
Knives Out (Amazon Prime Video)
Ana de Armas leads an ensemble cast of big names like Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer in Rian Johnson’s recent whodunit film. She stars as Marta, the altruistic caretaker for a successful crime novelist named Harlan Thrombey (Plummer). But when Harlan meets an untimely death, renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Craig) is brought in to uncover the truth of who killed him, starting with his family members as suspects. De Armas’ character is the moral compass amidst the many money-hungry members of the Thrombey clan, and she serves as the heartbeat of the film through all its twists and turns.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold (Hulu)
The live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon series Dora the Explorer ventures into the titular character’s life as a teenager. Isabela Moner plays adolescent Dora, who leads some of her fellow high-schoolers on a wild journey to save her parents after they disappear looking for the Lost City of Gold. The PG-rated adventure comedy is one the whole family can enjoy and includes big names like Eva Longoria and Michael Peña as Dora’s parents, as well as Eugenio Derbez as their old friend Alejandro. Listen closely, and you’ll also hear the voice of Danny Trejo bringing to life Dora’s pet monkey Boots, as well as Benicio del Toro as the fox Swiper.
As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and continue working toward better representation of the Latinx community in film and TV, there are some projects on the horizon that are being anticipated as positive steps forward. One such example is Andrew Dominik’s upcoming bio drama Blonde based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel about the fictionalized inner life of Marilyn Monroe. De Armas was tapped to play the screen legend and called the opportunity “groundbreaking” in an interview with Vanity Fair. “A Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe; I wanted it so badly,” she shared. And de Armas’ lead casting as the Hollywood icon will hopefully pave the way for many more positive examples of Latinx representation to come.
