75th Emmy Award Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie
After getting nine out of twelve right in the Emmy acting categories last year, I’ll again discuss the possibilities and probabilities of each acting nominee taking home Emmy gold. After being delayed by two strikes, the show will finally air on Monday, January 15th at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
Let’s get to it!
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie
The nominees are:
- Young Mazino (Beef)
- Joseph Lee (Beef)
- Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird)
- Ray Lotta (Black Bird)
- Jesse Plemons (Love and Death)
- Richard Jenkins (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story)
- Murray Bartlett (Welcome to Chippendales)
As good as Joseph Lee, Jesse Plemons and Murray Bartlett are, none of them are winning this award.
Although Bartlett won an Emmy last year for The White Lotus and was nominated again this year in this category and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his stellar work in The Last of Us — which went to Nick Offerman for his role on the show over the weekend — I don’t think enough people saw Chippendales to take him to the top. The same could be said about Plemons in Love and Death.
I have long been a Richard Jenkins fan. However, while I think others will win for Monster, I don’t see Jenkins winning. Despite being terrific as the serial killer’s father, Lionel, he is often nominated in categories where someone else also gives an otherworldly performance that is otherworldly (see his two Oscar noms: for Best Actor in 2009, when he lost to Sean Penn in Milk and 2018, when he lost the Supporting Actor prize to Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
Although Lee was excellent in Beef, Mazino overshadows him on the show. I don’t think Lee is going to win, but I think he has a much better chance than his co-star.
Speaking of co-stars, Hauser and Liotta are both incredible in Black Bird (which somehow did not get a Best Limited Series nomination). Although the late, great Liotta might get some Emmy love for his final performance, there is the titanic performance that Hauser gives.
It’s undeniable how good Mazino is as lead Steven Yeun’s brother and roommate in Beef. If anyone is going to upset Hauser, it’s him. That being said, Hauser possibly gave the year’s best performance in any category as a deranged, yet charismatic killer. Based on a true story, Black Bird is an intense and fabulous watch. As good as Taron Egerton is in the lead role, Hauser’s work is transcendent.
Who Should Win: Paul Walter Hauser
Who Will Win: Paul Walter Hauser
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie
The nominees for the supporting actress category are:
- Maria Bello (Beef)
- Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & the Six)
- Claire Danes (Fleishman is in Trouble)
- Niecy Nash-Betts (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story)
- Merritt Wever (Tiny Beautiful Things)
- Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales)
- Juliette Lewis (Welcome to Chippendales)
As with Chippendales’ Murray Bartlett (see above), the same applies to Ashford and Lewis. I think enough people watched the Hulu series to nominate its four main actors (including lead Kumail Nanjiani). However, since the show itself was not nominated, I don’t think that any of its actors will score Emmys.
Merritt Wever fan won an Emmy for Nurse Jackie 10 years ago and won again more recently for the miniseries Godless. I would love to see her get up there again this year, but I don’t think she will. Neither does Maria Bello in Beef. Bello brings excellence to every role she performs and it’s sort astonishing that this is her first-ever nomination, despite doing great work for nearly three decades.
As much fun as she is in Beef, I think three other performances overshadow her this year. The first is Camila Morrone in Daisy Jones & the Six. The flashier female role in the show is Riley Keough’s titular role, but Morrone brings a depth and humanity to the miniseries that grounds everything in genuine human drama. Although I’d like to see her win, I don’t think she will.
Claire Danes and Niecy Nash-Betts are excellent. Danes is remarkable as Rachel Fleishman, the estranged wife of Jesse Eisenberg’s lead character. She takes a difficult, abrasive character and infuses her with humanity in a way that I felt the book did not. I think she has a good chance of winning this award, but she’s going to have to go through Nash-Betts to do it.
Nash-Betts has been on televisions for many years. Despite being known for her comedy roles, some may have surprised many with her range and ability to give a fantastic dramatic performance in Monster. Emmy voters may have ticked the box for her work as Glenda Cleveland, Jeffrey Dahmer’s real-life neighbor who tried to alert the police to his evil ways. Niecy is stunning in the role.
