How to Raid Your Closet for a Last-Minute Audition

So you have an audition due for a specific character type and you don’t have the time or the funds to hit the thrift stores for a whole new look. Never fear! There are simple tricks that can turn your closet into a virtual wardrobe department. Here are some things that can help you adapt to specific looks in a hurry.

1. Remember you’re suggesting, not costuming: It doesn’t have to be exact. If you’re going out for a medical drama and you don’t have scrubs, any solid-colored v-neck shirt will do. For best results, the shirt should be a bit loose and have a small v rather than a plunging neckline. If you don’t have one on hand, borrow from a friend. Is the shirt too loose? Binder clips can gather some excess fabric at your back. This brings us to our second point…

2. It doesn’t have to fit: Well, it has to fit a bit. But anything too long, too big, or too risqué can be safety-pinned or clipped into submission. Remember, it only has to look good from the front!

3. When in doubt, grab a blazer: A solid, sober-colored blazer is a great cheat for all roles professional. Lawyer? Blazer. Newscaster? Blazer. Detective? Expert? Principal? Blazers for everyone! If you tend to get called in for these kinds of roles, having a couple of nicely fitting blazers that read well on camera might be a good investment.

4. Create a wholesome Mom/Dad/Neighbor package: This covers a lot of commercial territory. If you’re struggling for one of these, grab a solid-colored shirt (maybe a nice mock turtleneck) and a cardigan. Cardigans are the warmer, fuzzier blazers. They’re great for teachers, parents, best friends and anyone wholesome, non-threatening and relatable.

5. Working class cheat: Need to communicate that you’re skilled with your hands, maybe a little bit rustic? Roll up your sleeves to mid-forearm. A soft denim button-down is a great staple to keep on hand for these.

6. A little accessorizing can go a long way: A simple accessory can alter a whole look. Scarves and hats are the stars of the show. Just be strategic about when and what you’re using. You don’t want to obscure your face or hair too much, or go too costumey.

Planning ahead and stocking your closet with some of these quick-fix items can go a long way toward making sure you’re never caught with your metaphorical pants down. Better yet if you cater your audition closet to your types. It doesn’t have to break the bank either. Thrift stores are great sources for audition go-tos. Again, it only has to look good from the front!

At the end of the day, the performance is what matters most and clothes aren’t worth stressing over. But these little tweaks do a lot to enhance the look of the audition and showcase your talent.
