3 New Series Premiering This Month and the Performances to Watch

Besides some must-see films releasing this month, there are a number of new series premiering on a variety of platforms that offer viewers a chance to see some highly-anticipated performances from the safety of their homes. Keep reading for our top picks of the new shows releasing in March, as well as the actors to note in each. From Anthony Mackie to J.K. Simmons, there is some serious upcoming talent coming to a TV near you.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The success of WandaVision has many eager for the next Disney+ series to feature members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The show’s official synopsis tells us that the series takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and follows Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) as they come together for a global adventure that puts both their patience and abilities to the test. Besides anticipating the work of Mackie and Stan as they reprise their respective roles from other MCU installments, be sure to keep an eye out for Emily VanCamp coming back as Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl as Helmut Zemo. Plus, Wyatt Russell will portray John Walker/U.S. Agent in the comic book character’s MCU debut. You can catch all these performances and more when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+ come March 19.

Genius: Aretha

The National Geographic anthology series Genius previously covered historical figures like Albert Einstein (portrayed by Geoffrey Rush) and Pablo Picasso (played by Antonio Banderas). Now it’s time for the civil rights leader and iconic singer known as the Queen of Soul to get her own installment. National Geographic asserts that the upcoming season “will explore Aretha Franklin’s musical genius, her incomparable career and the immeasurable impact she has had on music and culture.” Prepare yourself for Cynthia Erivo’s transformative work as Franklin in the series, as well as Courtney B. Vance’s portrayal of her father C.L. Franklin. We know that Genius: Aretha is not technically a new series, but due to the nature of the show, this will be a standalone installment. And, it’s one that fans have been waiting on since its originally-slated premiere last spring, which was pushed back by the pandemic. Plus, Genius: Aretha is so anticipated that it’s warranted an extravagant world premiere, complete with drive-in screenings held in multiple cities and a powerful line-up of performances. So it easily makes our list, and you can set your watchlist for the network premiere of Genius: Aretha on National Geographic come March 21, with episodes becoming available on Hulu the day after their channel debuts.

Invincible

You might not have anticipated an animated series on this list, but when it comes from the person who gave us The Walking Dead, there’s no question about it. The series is based on the Skybound/Image comic of the same name and follows a teenager named Mark Grayson who appears to be your average 17-year-old. The only catch is that Mark’s father happens to be Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet. But the series’ official synopsis warns, “as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.” The second reason Invincible made our list is because of the sheer talent it houses. Minari star Steven Yeun voices the character of Mark, and J.K. Simmons lends his vocal talent to the role of Omni-Man. Plus, members of the show’s supporting cast include names like Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill, Mahershala Ali, Jason Mantzoukas, Zazie Beetz and Walton Goggins. But you’ll have to wait until March 26 when Invincible premieres on Amazon Prime Video to start taking in its powerhouse cast.

Fans of the MCU, Aretha Franklin and The Walking Dead can be eagerly anticipating our picks of the new series that premiere this month. Plus, anyone who enjoys star-studded casts can look forward to a slew of highly-anticipated performances. So whether you’re planning to watch The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Genius: Aretha, Invincible, or all three, you can look forward to an exciting month of series premieres.
